The ancestral home of the Buchanans is on the eastern shore of Loch Lomond in what is now Stirlingshire. Ancient histories place ancestors of the Buchanans on those lands as early as 1019 A.D.
In the reign of David II (1329-1371), Maurice of Buchquhanane had, from Lennox, a charter confirming him in the lands of that name, and this the King reconfirmed in 1370.
The name Buchanan is a place name taken from those lands.
